Happy Friday, PV Guide readers! I hope you have a great weekend ahead of you.

Every Friday, I’m recommending a few great things to watch that the algorithm might not be pushing at you right now, with a focus on variety, so every reader can find something they’re interested in. The Weekend Watchlist will always be 100% free. (But I have opened up PV Guide’s Premium Tier, for those interested in supporting this work!)

New titles on VOD this week include J.J. Perry’s Mad-Max-but-about-stealing-the-Mona-Lisa Afterburn with Dave Bautista, Daniel Day-Lewis’s Anemone directed by his son Ronan, the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, and the dog-starring horror movie Good Boy. On streaming, Kathryn Bigelow’s new movie A House of Dynamite premieres on Netflix, while the summer horror sensation Weapons lands on HBO Max.

One other note before we get into the picks: new subscriptions have been falling off since we made the switch to Ghost and lost access to Substack’s discovery tools. If you’ve been liking PV Guide, let a friend know! It’d mean a lot to me.

If you like: Vampire movies, neo-Westerns, unlikely genre meshes
Watch at: Shudder (I believe, sources vary), or on YouTube/Archive.org if you know where to look

Kathelyn Bigelow’s new movie, the apocalyptic political thriller A House of Dynamite, premieres on Netflix this week. It’s been a while since one of her movies really worked for me, so it’s a good excuse to revisit her very best – the neo-Western vampire movie Near Dark. And just in time for Halloween!

The movie follows a young man (Adrian Pasdar) in small town Oklahoma who gets pulled into the orbit of a traveling vampire family. It features an all-timer performance from Bill Paxton and a great blend of the two seemingly disparate genres at its core.

If you like: Action comedy, slice-of-life teen shows, the Baby Assassins
Watch at: HBO Max

Last year, the first episode of the Baby Assassins TV show briefly appeared and then disappeared on TV Tokyo’s YouTube channel. I’ve spent most of this year hoping that the rest of the show would somehow become available stateside. Good news, everyone: The whole first season is now on HBO Max. My weekend plans are set.

The Diplomat season 3

If you like: Shows about power couples, Keri Russell, The West Wing
Watch at: Netflix

Netflix’s most moreish political drama returns with an exciting new season that returns the focus to the appealingly complex marriage at its center. Things kick off immediately after the dramatic events that ended season 2, and I’ll stop there in case you haven’t watched this show at all yet. If you watched the first two seasons, good news: The Diplomat is back. If you haven’t, it’s time to catch up.
