Weekend Watchlist, 3/6: Something old, something new
What to watch this weekend
Happy Friday everyone!
A few items to promote: my Back in Action 1991 series continues with a look back at the action releases from February 1991 and February 2026, and we have a bonus episode of Sports Movies That Don’t Suck out, a best-of special that covers the sports movies of 2025 from around the world that are worth your time.
Now, onto this week’s picks!

A Little Prayer

Where to watch: Prime Video, free with a library card on Kanopy
One of my favorite under-the-radar movies of 2025, A Little Prayer is a domestic drama set in North Carolina. It follows the close friendship between Bill (David Strathairn) and his daughter-in-law Tammy (Jane Levy) – two people who just seem to understand each other. When Bill discovers his son David (Will Pullen) is cheating on Tammy, he struggles with how to handle the situation. It’s a beautiful, understated movie about familial bonds, inter-generational friendships, and what we owe each other.
Jason Mantzoukas on Ask Hank Anything
Where to watch: YouTube
Hank Green’s new YouTube show Ask Hank Anything has a fun, self-evident premise, and the strength of each episode varies wildly depending on the guest. No surprise, Jason Mantzoukas’s episode was stellar, bringing some excellent questions and prompting some great conversation about food allergies, social media, and yes, dog butts.
Something from Criterion’s VHS Forever collection

Where to watch: Criterion Channel
Another month, another excellent collection on the Criterion Channel. This time it’s an ode to the VHS, filled with movies representative of that era. It’s hard to go wrong with the collection, but I can personally highly recommend Videodrome and The Watermelon Woman. If you’re looking for a very silly, very ‘90s Hong Kong-inspired Hollywood action movie, try The Big Hit. If you like Michael Haneke’s style of thrillers that are major downers, check out Benny’s Video. I’ve also heard great things about Body Double, Lost Highway, and both Ring movies, but haven’t seen them myself yet.
